How does a chiropractor or osteopath help with back pain?

Back pain/lumbago/sciatica/slipped disc, it doesn’t matter what you call it, back pain is a serious problem. 9 out of 10 of us will suffer with some form of lower back pain during our lifetime.

The good news is that you CAN fix it and we CAN help!!!

A good chiropractor or osteopath can identify the cause of your back pain, then prescribe a tailored treatment and rehab programme that is designed to eliminate your lower back issues permanently.

Here at Pro Performance – Chiropractic and Osteopathy Clinics, we have been treating low back pain in Notting Hill W8 and The City EC2 for over 15 years. Our friendly Chiropractors and Osteopaths will help you get out of pain and stay out of pain using advanced modern treatments and corrective exercises.

Here is the Pro Performance Clinics guide to fixing low back pain…

1. Assess the TRUE cause!

Our Chiropractors and Osteopaths will perform a full movement assessment on you at your first appointment. This will reveal any tight muscles or joints that are contributing to your problem.

It might not always be obvious which areas you need to work on. For example, did you know that most people with bad backs have tight hip flexors at the front of your thigh? It is these hidden problems that need to be treated before starting a rehab programme.

2. Treat the cause AND the symptoms!

Most people come to us in pain, therefore treatment is always focused on eliminating pain ASAP. However, at the same time, your chiropractor or osteopath will give you super simple exercises to do. These corrective exercises will fix any of the underlying problems that created your pain in the first place.

We video all your exercises for you, so you don’t have to remember them. Plus, we always make sure they only take 5 minutes max! No 2-hour gym sessions we promise 🙂

Our Chiropractors and Osteopaths will explain which areas need treatment and how long it should take to see results. Most people can unlock their lower back pain within 1-8 treatment sessions. We will let you know how many sessions it should take to get you back to full health.

3. Get Strong! Once your pain has gone and the tight muscles and joints have been relaxed using our specialist massage, stretching, dry needling and joint manipulation techniques. It is important that you add strength to weak muscles in your core so that every muscle is working equally in your body and your symptoms don’t come back.

Your Pro Performance Chiropractor or Osteopath will be providing you with corrective exercises to build up strength in these key areas and then discuss other exercises you should be doing, such as swimming, lifting weights, yoga or pilates.

4. Fix The Big Picture!

High levels of stress, poor quality sleep and emotional issues all need to be fixed if you want to be pain free and feel amazing.
When we are stressed or tired, we hold ourselves in a hunched forward position that can cause slipped discs and low back pain.
It doesn’t matter how strong you are, stress will eventually force you back into your hunched posture, so you must address it.
Our Chiropractors and Osteopaths will teach you how to reverse the effects of stress using specialist breathing and mindfulness techniques.

5. MOVE YOUR BODY!!!

Lower backs LOVE moving! Small movements throughout the day help to lubricate the joints in your lower back, tone the muscles and relieve pressure on the nerves.
Humans evolved over 2 million years to move every day, hunting and gathering, not sit at a desk! So, the key to maintaining great posture is to move regularly!
Even when you are sitting down at the desk, try to change position every 20 minutes, get a standing desk and vary your position throughout the day.
Raise your monitor height up so you are looking straight ahead, drink lots of water so that you go to the bathroom regularly, work out at lunchtime to break up the day. All these tactics can make a dramatic difference to your spinal health.

Conclusion

Without the right plan, fixing your lower back can be a a minefield, people often spend ages stretching the wrong muscles or foam rolling the wrong joints. However, if you see one of our expert Chiropractors or Osteopaths first, they will guide you through every step of the process.

  1. Identify the cause of your low back pain.
  2. Treat the cause AND your symptoms.
  3. Strengthen weak muscles.
  4. Heal your stress and emotional tension.
  5. MOVE!!!
