What Does Shockwave Therapy Involve?

Shockwave treatment involves putting a water-based gel onto the injured area. Then the shockwave machine transmits supersonic pressure waves into the injured site.

The treatment lasts about 5-10 minutes per body area and can be mildly uncomfortable as we are treating injured tissues. However, the clinician will always adjust the intensity of the treatment to your sensitivity levels, ensuring each session is well tolerated.

Benefits and Outcomes of Shockwave Therapy Treatment

Shockwave therapy is designed to promote the body’s own healing response. Patients normally report improvements within 1-3 sessions, although it can take up to 6 sessions to have its full therapeutic effect.

Shockwave therapy FAQ’s

Find answers below to our most frequently asked questions about Shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy is a treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate healing in injured or painful tissues. It’s commonly used by our chiropractors and osteopaths to accelerate recovery and reduce chronic pain without the need for surgery or medication.
Shockwave therapy is highly effective for treating tendon problems such as plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, shoulder tendinopathy, calcific tendonitis, coccyx pain and chronic muscle pain. It’s also used to treat scar tissue, shin splints and delayed healing in soft tissue injuries.
Most patients experience only mild to moderate discomfort during treatment. The intensity can be adjusted to your comfort level, and any discomfort typically subsides quickly after the session.
The number of sessions varies depending on the condition being treated, but most patients see significant improvement within 3 to 6 sessions spaced one week apart.
Each shockwave therapy session takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, making it a quick and convenient option for pain relief and rehabilitation.
Shockwave therapy is generally safe, with minimal side effects. Some patients may experience temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, or mild bruising in the treated area, but these effects usually resolve within a few days.

Many patients notice an improvement in symptoms after the first or second session. However, optimal results typically occur a few months after completing the full treatment course as the body continues to heal.

Yes, shockwave therapy is a safe and clinically proven treatment used worldwide. It is performed by our trained clinicians and involves no medication or surgery, making it a popular option for natural pain relief.

Shockwave therapy is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant, have blood clotting disorders, are taking blood-thinning medication, or have an active infection or tumor in the treatment area.

No referral is needed. You can book a consultation directly with our chiropractic and osteopathy clinic to find out if shockwave therapy is right for you.
